Sometimes accidents lead us to our true destiny. Did you know Julio Iglesias, who has sold more than 300 million albums, was on his way to becoming a goalkeeper when fate intervened leading him to become a singer!

AT age 10, Julio was a little Spanish boy with a dream. He wanted to play football for his favourite club – Real Madrid! He played all day, practised hard and became a very good goalkeeper. By the time he was 20, the childhood dream was beginning to come true. He was signed up to play for Real Madrid. And most football pundits were predicting that young Julio would soon become Spain’s No.1 goalkeeper. One evening in 1963, Julio and his friends set out in a car for a night of fun. It turned out to be a night of horror, as the car they were travelling in met with a terrible accident. And young Julio – soon-to-be star goalkeeper of Real Madrid and Spain – found himself in hospital, paralysed from the waist downwards. Doctors were unsure if he’d ever be able to walk again. They were pretty sure he would never play football again. The road to recovery was long and painful. Julio spent the night thinking about what might have been. His mind was filled with sorrow, anger, regret. To lessen the pain, he took to writing songs and poems at night, with a tear in his eye and a pen in his hand. And to increase the dexterity in his hand, a nurse gave him a guitar. He had never touched a guitar in his life! But soon Julio began strumming the guitar and also singing the songs that he had been writing. After being bed-ridden for 18 months, Julio gradually picked up the pieces of his life. Five years after the accident, Julio entered a singing competition – and won the first prize – singing a song called “Life goes on the same!” He never played football again. But with a guitar in hand and a song on his lips, Julio Iglesias went on to become one of the top ten singers in the history of music, selling over 300 million albums. Just imagine. If not for that accident, Julio Iglesias would have probably been just another goalkeeper in Europe! What happened to Julio that evening in 1963 could happen to any of us. A setback or an accident – or failure – can often appear to be the end of the road. But it seldom is. When one door shuts, usually another one opens. It’s just that we get so busy staring at the closed door and banging our head against it that we fail to spot the other door opening. Learning to cope with failure is often the first – and most critical step – towards success. Never let failure impact your sense of self-belief. You are a star, with unique talents. Didn’t clear the entrance exam to engineering college? Maybe you weren’t meant to be an engineer. That’s all. Even Albert Einstein didn’t clear the entrance exam to join a polytechnic. But he didn’t do too badly, did he? Maybe there is a better, brighter career waiting for you. The trick is to move on and like Julio, tell yourself that “Life goes on the same”. Several years ago, a bright little boy in a government school in Kerala had a dream. He wanted to be a doctor. He did well in school, and everybody was convinced that this little boy would someday become a fine doctor. He wrote the entrance exam – but failed to make the cut! He was devastated. His parents were shocked. He went on to do a BSc then a Masters degree, worked with an IT firm – and later went on to found Infosys. His name? Kris Gopalakrishnan, CEO, Infosys. Just imagine. Had Kris not failed the medical entrance, he may have been in some little town in Kerala today, prescribing antibiotics for a runny nose or a nagging flu. Imagine! Good lesson to learn from Julio. And from Kris. When one door shuts, another one opens. Just believe in yourself. Next time you are faced with a failure or a setback, look out for the other door. Push it open. And go find your place in the sun!

Earn your degree in 48 hours. Get a BBA now and earn an MBA after two years of work experience. Fully recognized! Advertisements like this aredime a dozen in newspapers and magazines, and some of them even offer electronic delivery wherein the degree is delivered by email. Fake degree industry is worth over Rs. 12,000 crores worldwide. Mr. John advices on how to spot the bogus degrees.
A recent research has estimated that the fake degree industry is worth over Rs. 12,000 crores worldwide. In case of India, the UGC maintains a list of fake universities, but it does not provide you the list of online fakes. We requested Dr.John Bear, the world renowned authority on online degrees, to explain to our readers how to spot a fake degree grading institution. – Editor’s note

THERE is no unanimity on what a degree mill is. No one denies that a ‘university’ operating from a mailbox service, selling diplomas to anyone, no questions asked, is a mill. But what if there were a requirement of one month of study and a 10-page thesis? Six months of study, 50 pages? Two years of study and 200 pages? Would it be still a fake university?

A survey of dozens of definitions of ‘degree mill’ found five relevant factors in determining school legitimacy:

* What degree-granting authority has it?

* Amount of work required

* Quality of work required

* Process for awarding credit for prior learning

* Credentials of people who make decisions

Thus a degree mill can be defined as an entity in which:

* Degree-granting authority does not come from a generally-accepted government agency;

* Procedures for determining the amount and quality work do not meet generally-accepted standards; and

* People making these decisions do not have relevant credentials, training, or experience.

The mill-operators most popular tool: The apostille

The Apostille is used to fool people in one country into thinking a fake diploma issued in another country is legitimate. The implications are significant for higher education, immigration systems (visas), and commerce (jobs, promotions, pay raises). The Apostille is simply, an international notarisation, or documentation.

Authorities in one location certify that the signature and seal on a public document from another location is an authentic copy. The Apostille Convention makes clear that, ‘…the effect of an Apostille does not extend to the content of the public document to which it relates.’ One can take any document to a local notary service anywhere. The notary compares the signature on the document with the signature on a passport or driver’s license, and if they are the same, will stamp and seal the document.

The notarised document is then submitted to a national agency which confirms that the original notarized document has a proper seal and signature, then issues the Apostille. At no point does anyone read the document. Apostilles are issued by various agencies: the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the UK, the Department of State in the US, the Ministry of External Affairs in India, etc., and sometimes by embassies and consulates.

Scores of degree mills have used the Apostille process to fool students. They type out a statement that say they are licensed, accredited, approved, and internationally accepted. That statement is locally notarised, then they get the Apostille and say, for instance, ‘We are fully accredited and recognized by the government of the United States, as attested in a document signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.’

Warning signs of a degree mill Many of the warning signs are self-apparent, if one is looking for them.
* False or misleading recognition claims. Many people think that accreditation is a mark of quality. It can be, but there are more than 250 ‘accreditation mills’ set up to accredit bad and fake schools.

* Falsely depicting their campus. One mill used computer techniques to paste a sign atop a photo of the building where they rented one small office.

* Ratio of degree programmes to faculty and staff. Mills typically offer degree programmes in hundreds of subjects, despite having at best a few faculty.

* False or misleading memberships and affiliations.

* False or misleading testimonials, typically written by the school owners themselves.

* False alumni descriptions. Mills in existence for only a few months have claimed to have hundreds of thousands of graduates.

* Misleading Internet advertising and websites. One mill set up a website that was an exact copy of their country’s Academy of Sciences, except they had the Academy endorsing their school.

* Abuse of the Apostille process. The most widespread and effective tool used by degree mills.

Credential evaluation

These services evaluate degrees and credentials in one country, as they may apply to further education, licensure, or employment in another country. They might be asked to determine if a Brasilian ‘Bacharel’ is equivalent to, higher, or lower than a Japanese ‘advanced diploma.’ While most services are reliable, there are renegade ones, established or supported by degree mills. They produce reports stating that the credential of a given mill is the equivalent of a traditional university degree. One solution is regulating such services, or forming a trade association with high standards. In the US, there is the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to fill this need.

Another possible solution could be an expansion and refinement of the Bologna Process

[www.ond.vlaanderen.be/hogeronderwijs/bologna/], an affiliation of 4,000 schools in 46 European countries, that is working to develop consensus on the work required to earn various degrees, and a standardization of degree titles. In case of India the listings are maintained by Association of Indian Universities as well as the UGC and that of AICTE.

Consumer organisations

People wishing to learn more about a school can turn to a consumer advice and rights organisation, either governmental (often an ombudsman) or private.

Look on lists published by other organisations
A list of degree mills and current news about fake diplomas, is maintained on a reliable private website called Diploma Mill News.

A book the author and his daughter have written on earning degrees by distance learning has chapters describing unaccredited schools and degree mills. While Bears Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning is out of print, many libraries have it, and more than half the text can be found online without cost at www. tinyurl.com .

Develop your own information

Telephone them: A simple ‘detective tool’ is telephoning a school during business hours. If there is an answering service, that is a clue. If a call at three in the morning produces a sleepy voice, answering, ‘Hello,’ that is another clue.

Who owns the website: Who established and operates the website. With degree mills, it is often a location other than where the school claims to be. The information is available without cost at  www .whois .net  .If a school blocks that information, that is also a clue.

What is at the campus address: Entering the address into an Internet search bar often yields information on the occupants of that address. If there is no university, but an office service bureau or mailbox service, that is a clue. One can use free Internet aerial photo service, to see the what is at the address. Terraserver (www. terraserver.com), Google (www. maps. google.com ) .Google also offers street-level photographs as well.

Business information: Many schools, good and bad, have the legal structure of a company or corporation. Information on who formed the company, where it is located, and who the officers and directors are, can be obtained from online government sources.

There is, in law, the concept of sumptuary, or so-called victimless crimes: gambling, prostitution, pornography, drugs, and now the sale of degrees and credentials. In each case, it is a matter of supply and demand. Because some people want the product or service, others will profit by making it available to them. This has gone on for centuries, and very likely always will. The best hope of progress, however small, is to shine the light of publicity on the bad schools, the light of embarrassment on the people buying and using their degrees, and the light of knowledge on professional educators, to encourage them to defend and protect their worthy tradition.

Selecting a course and college is always the most difficult exercise for any student. Careers360 presents you a set of dos and don’ts . So here we have  4 mantras to choose the right course and college……..

“I spent one year doing engineering and ped out, because my interest was Physics,” says Senior Advocate and leading public interest lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who finally settled for law. But very few students have the luxury of time to change course mid way. So it is imperative that one identifies the right course the first time. Here are some pointers on how to go about. Course Vs College: A college education is not only about studies, but also about the opportunities one gets, the peer group one interacts with and life long friendships one can form. “Old boy network is alive and kicking,” says S.Rajaram, a media professional and former student of Maharaja’s college, Ernakulum. So irrespective of the place one studies, studying in a reputed college always helps. Between a college and a course, especially in non-professional programmes the college wins hands down. But do not get into any course, just for the sake of entering a college. For some one who hates numbers, doing Mathematics even from Delhi’s hallowed St. Stephens would not help, because he or she will not enjoy the course. So as far as possible study what you like and what your capabilities allow you. Says Prof. Sanjay Srivastava, a PhD in Psychology and Dy. Director General of Amity Business school, “When it comes to selection of a course, it is important to understand what one dislikes and not to do that.”. Rest would, of course, fall in line, since interest and passions change over time. Passion is an abused word: Narayana Murthy was a passionate Marxist and wanted to be a politician. But passion is a transient phenomenon according to Murthy, who eventually went on to become the father figure of Indian software industry. So unless one is absolutely sure, or one has the natural flair or talent for sports or music, pay more attention to opportunities that are opening up and choose a course that would help you realise them. For example, communication-related options are plenty now. So, according to Career Counsellor Arun Sarma, courses like English Literature, Journalism and Mass Media are gaining currency. But Dr. Dheeraj Sanghi, an architect, warns that interest matters when it comes to professional courses. One who is not good at tinkering with materials shouldn’t opt for mechanical engineering. Sciences are not superior: Prof. Deepak Kumar, a professor of education at JNU, says, “What is important is to aspire for excellence in any domain you choose to study. No subject is implicitly better than the other.” Data on the other hand is in favour of sciences. A recent study published in the magazine US News says that science graduates out-earn humanities by a factor of two. But Humanities too offer a lot of options, especially in fields like communications, management and administration. Interest does matter: Shirali Tyabji, who recently graduated from Shristi School of Design, on the other hand, says interests do play a role and must not be ignored. This is true about courses which demand a modicum of talent, like design, arts, music, film making etc. Unless one has a flair for these domains do not venture into these fields. But when it comes to Sociology and Economics or English Literature and journalism, one need not be too narrow and a selection based on a combination of potential opportunities and interests must do the trick.
